Think of Brothers Grimm meets Dr. Zuess with strong ecological and environmental themes. This story follows a Sockeye Salmon from fry to Death as he attempts to "Spawn and Die". Of course this little Salmon is different from the others as he questions the purpose of his seemingly meaningless plight. The Fish meets a nice female friend along the way and her attitude helps him through his dark thoughts until she too is lost from him. The Salmon is pre-occupied with ideas of what is fair and meaningful. Eventually the little Salmon comes to the end of his life cycle as do all the other Salmon in the river. This story tackles the tough issues of life and death, fairness versus reality, and the propensity of children to develop emotions of entitlement. Using themes of danger, consequence and action especially help to engage and encourage young boys to read. Scary and important themes in stories create interest in children which focuses their attention and improves literacy. Most will be happy to enjoy this as a children's story for adults for adults as well! One Dead Fish was written, illustrated and narrated by a certified Primary and Junior School Teacher with an undergraduate degree in resource and parks management. Enjoy by the campfire!
